Downton Abbey Season 5 Previews

On Tuesday July 22nd the Television Critics Association was treated to a preview of Season 5 of Downton Abbey.

  • More Dead Crawleys? First off, no major character dies!  Hooray for that!

  • Brary (Branson and Mary) Romance? Brary-ship fans will continue to be disappointed as there seems to be no romance in store between Lady Mary and Branson (hooray for that too!). However they are both looking for a new love in their life, but in very different places. Schoolteacher Sarah Bunting seems to still have influence over Tom, and Lord Grantham is not necessarily happy about it.

  • Baby Bates? Anna and Mr. Bates (I would love to hear her call him John for once) are still dealing with Anna's rape. Did he kill Green? Do we hope he did? Those questions will remain with us through Season 5, hopefully with some sort of closure. A Baby Bates would certainly be a sweet addition, but then how on earth would Lady Mary get dressed in the morning without her Lady's Maid?

  • Go Granny!: The Dowager Countess (how we love her!) apparently was not a shy wallflower in her youth, as there is a suggestion made of a possible "past" with a prince. "Go Granny!"

  • Poor, poor Edith: And finally, poor Lady Edith has to watch from afar as her daughter is raised by the nearby farming family. Will Gregson be found, dead or alive? And what was that paper she signed the night before he went away? Will Edith inherit money in her own right and not have to live under Papa's thumb anymore? Or will she find herself the owner of a newspaper and no clue what to do? Maybe one of these days Edith will catch a break.

  • Harson (Mrs. Hughes and Carson) Romance?: Okay, well what about Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes holding hands at the end of Season 4? Will their "working" marriage as Butler and Housekeeper blossom into a true romantic relationship? I almost hope not as the tension of "almost" love is often better than when the on-screen couple actually get together.

Downton Abbey Deleted Scenes from Season 3

7/22/2014

Did you know that when Downton Abbey plays on PBS in the US they actually add footage? When the show airs on ITV in the UK there are commercial breaks. However, lucky for those in the United States when Downton Abbey airs on PBS there are no commercials, so they add in extra scenes. When the DVDs are published or if you download from Amazon Prime, you see the original UK versions. So here are some of the added scenes that you may have missed:

Season 3, Episode 3

Season 3, Episode 4

I'm glad we get to see a bit more of Mr. Mason and Daisy here. He is so sweet, and her visit makes a lot more sense with this scene.

Highclere Castle, more Monarch of the Glen than Downton Abbey

7/16/2014

Highclere Castle, UK
The exterior and interior upstairs scenes in Downton Abbey is filmed at Highclere Castle, the ancestral home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon in West Berkshire, UK. The opulence and splendor we see on the hit British ITV drama belies the truth of how much of the castle looked just a few short years ago in 2009. This post in the Daily Mail shows dramatic pictures of some of the bedrooms that are literally crumbling to the floor.

It is so fortunate that Julian Fellowes, a friend of the Highclere owners Lord and Lady Carnavan, saw the potential in building an entire fictional world around this spendid home. He had done it once before with the Ardverikie Estate in Scotland, with the hit series Monarch of the Glen. In fact Monarch of the Glen, the story of a Scottish family estate trying to avoid bankruptcy by making the house a tourist attraction, actually tells the story of Highclere Castle much better than Downton Abbey does. Downton Abbey may be representative of Highclere's past, but Monarch of the Glen is a much better representation of it's present and future.

Read more about it here in this 2009 story in the Daily Mail.

Downton Abbey ladies at a photo shoot for Harper's Bazaar

Fans in Britain are gearing up for the new season of Downton Abbey (Series 5) that will air in mid-September. Rumour has it to be September 14th 2014 but it it not official yet.

The August 2014 issue of Harper's Bazaar in the UK features a photo shoot of all the Downton ladies, including the downstairs staff including Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), Leslie Nichol (Mrs. Patmore), Sophie McShera (Daisy), Raquel Cassidy (Baxter, Lady Grantham's ladies's maid) and Emmy nominee Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates). While we are used to seeing Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith), Elizabeth McGovern (Cora, Lady Grantham), and Lily James (Lady Rose) in amazing gowns in their roles on the show, they are still stunning in these modern designer gowns.

The accompanying article has many fascinating clues to the "behind the scenes" world of Downton Abbey. The women have high praise for writer/creator Julian Fellowes. Elizabeth McGovern, who plays Lady Grantham, is quoted saying how Fellowes has a ‘sixth sense for character and… the politics of emotions, class, familial status’.
